Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens lynchpin Ed Jenkins has signed a new two-year contract with the program.
The 30-year-old double Commonwealth Games medalist made his debut for the national Sevens side in February 2008 and is the most capped Australian player at World Series level of all-time (45 caps).
Sydneysider Jenkins said: “It’s a brilliant time for Rugby Sevens with the Olympics fast approaching but even after that it’s just as exciting with the Commonwealth Games in 2018 on home soil and the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco too.
“We’re looking to build depth in the program and I’m looking forward to being able to pass on my knowledge to the new players looking to make their mark over the next two years.”
Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens Head Coach Andy Friend added: “We’re all delighted that Ed has committed to the program for another two years. He is an inspirational leader for the group – tough, resilient and demanding both of himself and of others.
“Ed has been with us through the days when the Sevens was perceived as more of a development tool to higher honours which was tough, and in my opinion he deserves the opportunity to ride this new wave of support for the game of Rugby Sevens.”
In a further boost to Friend’s squad, John Porch has inked a new two-year deal after impressing in his five World Series tournaments during the 2015-16 season, while exciting 18-year-old prospect Josh Coward has signed his first professional rugby contract with the Sevens program. Coward was part of the Australian Sevens squad that won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in September 2015.
