The Blue Bulls did enough in the first half of their ABSA Currie Cup opener to beat the Pumas 38-15 at Loftus.

Even though the Pumas scored first through a Ricardo Croy penalty, they were outscored five tries to one in the first half and it looked like another hiding was on the cards.

John Mametsa scored a double while Stefan Watermeyer also crossed over after good work by Jacques-Louis Potgieter. Dean Greyling secured the Blue Bulls’ bonus point try after only 22minutes of the first half. Stephan Dippenaar scored 3 minutes later before the Pumas struck back just before half-time through a Tiaan Meyer try.

Half-time score Blue Bulls 31-10 Pumas

The second half was a very lacklustre affair with the Blue Bulls loose forwards being heavily penalised at the breakdown by referee Stuart Berry.

A few good passages of plays almost paid off for the Pumas but good defence kept them scoreless.

The Pumas also dominated the scrums and Dean Greyling left the field late in the second half.

The first points of the second half were scored in the 69th minute by Deon Stegmann through a Blue Bulls rolling maul.

The Pumas had the final say when replacement wing Allistair Kettledas scored in the corner.

Blue Bulls will be very disappointed that they could not finish off the Pumas in the second half and will have a look at the video replays of the breakdown where they were heavily penalised.
