The BMW Australia U20s have emerged victorious with a dominant 35-19 victory over Scotland at the World Rugby U20s Championship on Tuesday morning.

It was a strong second half performance from the Australia U20s that ensured the victory with the Aussie set piece proving the difference at the scrum and the lineout.

Australia ground down the Scottish resistance with a powerful and patient performance that included one of the tries of the tournament from Melbourne Rebels centre, Sione Tuipulotu.

Australia will now play New Zealand in the fifth placed final, which will be the third encounter between these two sides this year, with the tally at one a piece.

BMW Australia U20s Head Coach Adrian Thompson: “We can be proud of the performance we put on the park today as we had to work really hard against Scotland.

“Our second half defence returned to the standard that we expect.

“Our spark in attack shows what we can do when we limit our handling errors and back the man next to you.

“We will now get ready for our final challenge against New Zealand and we look forward to taking them on again.”

Australia takes on New Zealand in the fifth-place playoff at 11:30pm AEST on Saturday.

A double to centre Sione Tuipulotu sparked Australia’s late dominance, after a slow start turned into a formidable finish.

Australia had its first try in the third minute, through prop Tyrel Lomax, to gain the early advantage.

It took Scotland just three minutes to even up, though halfback Hugh Fraser, drawing scores level, and five minutes later they edged ahead with a second, though winger Robbie Nairn.

Tuipulotu put the Aussies back in front with a 25th minute try, converted by Mack Mason.

The Aussies had a major let off just after half-time but their relief only lasted four minutes, before Scotland’s Scott Cummings scored a try to put his side ahead once again.

Sione Tuipulotu had his second in the 55th minute, finishing off a scintillating Australian attacking passage, to springboard the Aussies into the front once again.

Flanker Liam Wright added a fourth in the 68th minute, off some multi-phase play from Australia, with centre Jordan Jackson-Hope adding a cherry on the result in the 79th minute.

Flyhalf Mack Mason slotted all five conversions in the match, making Scotland pay for some wayward penalty kicking earlier in the game.

Australia will play New Zealand in the battle to finish in fifth placed on Saturday night.

Australia 35 (Tyrel Lomax, Sione Tuipulotu 2, Liam Wright, Jordan Jackson-Hope tries; Mack Mason 5 cons;) defeated Scotland 19 (Robbie Nairn, Scott Cummings, Hugh Fraser tries; Hugh Fraser 2 cons; )
