Bok Women’s Sevens finish the season on a disappointing note

Loading...The Springbok Women’s Sevens on Saturday were forced to settle for a disappointing finish to the 2014/2015 Women’s World Series as they suffered defeats against China and the Netherlands to finish in 12th place at the Amsterdam Sevens.
The team started the clash against China with an encouraging try by Veroeshka Grain, who received a pass from Marithy Pienaar and crossed the tryline for a 5-0 lead.
They had a chance to strike again minutes later thanks to a fantastic chip kick by captain Zenay Jordaan, but she spilt the ball over the tryline after attempting to gather it.
China, however, hit back with a similar try shortly before half time as they chipped through and gathered to touch down, and then scored another on the stroke of half-time from a scrum to stretch their lead to 14-5.
Pienaar, however, closed the gap to 14-12 early in the second half as she received the ball in her own half and stepped her way past two defenders and then sprinted to the tryline for a stunning individual try.
But these efforts were cancelled out soon after as a series of penalties conceded and missed one-on-one tackles allowed China to shut them out of the match for good with their final try, which they converted for a 21-12 victory.
SA were forced onto the back foot in the opening exchanges of their final match against hosts, the Netherlands, as their defence again let them down. The opposition took full advantage of this to run in two early tries for a 10-0 lead.
Grain, however, reduced the gap to 10-7 shortly before halftime after receiving a stunning flick pass from Lorinda Brown to cruise to the tryline.
SA had another chance to score in the dying seconds before the break, but they were denied by the effective Dutch defence.
The second half was hard-fought as both teams tried hard to add to their score, and after a few tight exchanges the Netherlands found space in the middle of the field, which set them up for their third try and a 17-7 victory.
