Bok Women’s Sevens win Rugby Africa title

Loading...The Springbok Women’s Sevens on Sunday continued their fine form in the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens in Harare, Zimbabwe, to advance through the competition unbeaten and claim the title.
The team opened up the competition on Saturday with convincing victories against hosts, Zimbabwe, Senegal and Namibia, and then overpowered Uganda and Kenya on Sunday to claim the title.
Captain Lorinda Brown and her team wasted no time making their presence felt on Sunday as they combined an effective attacking and defensive effort to defeated Uganda 29-7 to book their place in the Cup Final against arch rivals Kenya.
The final was hard-fought as Kenya took a 10-7 lead in the first half, but the Springbok Women’s Sevens fought back to take a 17-10 lead. Kenya levelled the scores at 17-17, but a late try sealed the victory for the Bok Women’s Sevens.
The victory allowed the Springbok Women’s Sevens to continue their dominance in the African sevens championship, which they also won in 2014, 2011, 2008, 2007 and 2006.
The team will return to South Africa on Monday.
Springbok Women’s Sevens coach Renfred Dazel will name his SA Select team on Monday to participate in the Women’s Sevens Rugby Tournament in Hokkaido in Japan on Friday and Saturday.
This group of players will depart for Japan on Tuesday, where they will go up against eight Japanese club teams and sides from New Zealand and Australia in the invitational tournament.
