17 AUGUST 2015 – The Springboks responded to their historic home defeat to Argentina in the best possible way with a 26-12 victory in the return fixture in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

Statistics taken from the Vodacom Rugby App demonstrate how the Boks made the step-up from the previous week.

While it has been a marked improvement from the Durban defeat it was far from the complete performance with certain aspects still lagging.

It was in the set-piece in particular where South Africa ensured front-foot ball which was also aided by referee Glen Jackson’s solid performance with the whistle.

South Africa dominated the lineouts winning 12 to the six of Argentina on their own ball while the Boks also stole three on the opposition’s throw.

The scrums statistics also favoured South Africa five to three while the South Americans conceded 15 penalties, five more than the visitors.

It was also on attack that the Springboks held a firm upper hand making 15 clean breaks to Argentina’s 10 while having a slight edge in the Defenders beaten category, 22 to 20.

In the individual statistics, stalwart wing Bryan Habana proved his class shifting from his traditional left wing to the right and adjusting with aplomb.

Habana topped both the Metres Run and the Clean Breaks categories demonstrating how much of a force he was on attack.

He shared the top spot with fellow Springbok flyer Lwazi Mvovo with the 68 running metres they each made in the victory.

Springbok fullback Zane Kirchner, who made his return to the starting XV, made the third most metres with 49.

Habana made four clean breaks with Argentina’s Nicolas Sanchez his nearest rival with three, while Mvovo and compatriots Schalk Brits and Schalk Burger each made two.

Burger’s 14 carries tops this category with Argentine stalwart Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe making 11 for second spot while Habana shared third position with Argentina’s Santiago Cordero and Tomas Lezana with nine apiece.

Mvovo again highlighted his ability on attack where he beat three defenders along with countryman Pat Lambie, Lobbe and his compatriot Santiago Cordero.

Argentina’s Nicholas Sanchez’s 16 tackles topped the category stats with compatriot Juan Socina and Springbok flanker Heinrich Brussow making 14 each for second place.

Fiery South African lock Eben Etzebeth and Argentina’s Julian Montoya shared third place with 10 tackles each.
