Former Springboks Joel Stransky and Hanyani Shimange will host two rugby seminars in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively in the next fortnight titled “Ensuring Smarter Rugby in our Youth”.

The Rugby Seminar Series has been organised by the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund and BokSmart, the South African Rugby Union’s rugby safety programme, in association with the Sports Science Institute of South Africa.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the passing of Chris Burger during a rugby match. The Players’ Fund was subsequently started by some of his former team-mates, including former Springbok captain Morné du Plessis, the Chairman of the Fund.

The aim of the Rugby Seminar Series is to inform rugby players, rugby moms and dads, and rugby fans on some of the latest developments in the sport.

The first events of the series will focus on the positive effects of South African rugby safety interventions which have been aimed at reducing the rate of injury and improving the management of young players in the country.

The seminars will educate, inform and empower those involved in youth rugby in South Africa. The seminar at St John’s College in Johannesburg, on Tuesday 24 February, will be hosted by Stransky, while Shimange will do the same at the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town on Wednesday 4 March.

The seminars will include informative talks by three highly respected guest speakers, Dr Wayne Viljoen, SARU’s Senior Manager: Rugby Safety, Dr Jon Patricios, the President of the South African Sports Medicine Association who serves on World Rugby’s Concussion Advisory Panel and Justin Durandt, manager of the Discovery High Performance Centre at the Sport Science Institute of South Africa.

A R50 donation to the Players’ Fund will secure your place at a two and a half hour evening seminar including a refreshment break as well as sponsored lucky draw prizes.
