The Boland Rugby Union today announced the appointment of Randall Modiba as head coach of the Boland Cavaliers for the 2017 rugby season.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Boland Stadium in Wellington on Tuesday 13 December 2016.

Modiba has been appointed as the head coach of Boland Rugby’s senior professional team on a 2-year term (from 1 January 2017), following the resignation of former head coach Brent Janse van Rensburg in October 2016. Modiba was the team’s defence coach (Currie Cup Qualifiers) and attack / backline coach (Currie Cup Premier Division) during the 2016 Currie Cup competition.

Modiba has been involved in Boland Rugby Union’s coaching structures for the past 15 years and has achieved success with various teams. Besides having been part of the Cavaliers coaching staff for the past two seasons, Modiba was also the head coach of several successful junior Boland Rugby teams. Modiba coached Boland’s u.19 teams in 2009 and 2014, with these teams being crowned Currie Cup u.19 champions on both occasions.

Modiba will be assisted by former Boland Cavaliers captain Henley du Plessis (forwards coach), Jacques du Toit (Biokineticist / Strength and Conditioning coach) and Dunia Mouneimne (Physiotherapist) during the 2017 rugby season. The team has already begun their pre-season preparations early in November this year.

“We are proud to announce the appointment of Randall Modiba as head coach of the Boland Cavaliers, as this is a coach who has come through all of Boland Rugby’s structures”, said Boland Rugby Union president Ivan Pekeur.

“Modiba is a man who knows the union very well. Combine with his technical abilities, he is more than capable to succeed in this role.”

According to Modiba, he feels humbled and thankful for being given the opportunity to coach Boland Rugby’s senior side.

“My primary purpose will be to help take Boland Rugby to greater heights. This means that my work won’t end with the Cavaliers, but to ensure we work and develop all the talented players within Boland Rugby’s club structures,” said Modiba about his appointment.
