The Brazilian Sevens rugby team will visit South Africa from 19 to 26 September on a training mission to help them prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games in their home country.
The South Americans will host the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in three years’ time and have therefore qualified automatically for the Sevens competition at the world’s largest sporting event.

They will stay at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sports for the duration of their visit to South Africa. The SAS training facility is also the base camp of the Springbok Sevens, the current Commonwealth Gold medalists.

During their local visit, the Brazilians will have several field sessions at the Paul Roos Markötter Stadium and adjacent indoor centre, in addition to usage of the modern facilities at SAS.

They will also participate in several training sessions with the Springbok Sevens as well sharpening their fitness and training preparations against local university and club sides and SARU Sevens Academy.

SARU President, Regan Hoskins, said SARU is looking forward to welcome the 2016 Olympic hosts to South Africa.

“We are delighted to welcome Brazil to Stellenbosch and I am sure they are looking forward to test their skills against some of the best local and international Sevens talent. The facilities at SAS will offer them a fantastic training environment and they will have the benefit of interacting and gaining further insights from our best Sevens players and coaches,” said Mr Hoskins.

Meanwhile, the Springbok Sevens are continuing with their preparations for the season-opening HSBC Sevens World Series tournament at the Australian Gold Coast on 11 and 12 October. A top four spot on the World Series final standings will gain the team automatic qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The Springbok Sevens will be defending their home title on 13 and 14 December when SARU host the Cell C Nelson Mandela Bay SA Sevens tournament again in Port Elizabeth.

Tickets for this rugby extravaganza will go on sale shortly.
