The Bulls welcomed back their stars this week and with the return also came a mass amount of tries as they beat a Premier XV side 68 – 5 in a compulsory warm-up match at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

The Premier XV side never stood a chance against a Bulls side trying to prove a point after their second stringers lost against the EP Kings last week. At half time the boys in blue already led 33-0 with no intent of easing up during the second half.

New Springbok signing Bjorn Basson opened the score after returning Springbok stalwart Fourie du Preez put him into a massive gap. Basson went on to complete a hat-trick of tries while Pierre Spies and Wynand Olivier each crossed over for two tries. Morne Steyn was in good form as he converted seven of the first eight tries before he was replaced by Francois Brummer who converted the final two tries.

The Premier XV could salvage only one try to avoid a white-wash when Tian Meyer surprised the Bulls with a turnover and sprinted over in the corner.

Bakkies Botha was also in good form and kept the Premier XV’s defense busy while also smashing their offensive line back with ruthless tackles.

Premier XV: 5 (Half Time 0)

Try: Tian Meyer

Bulls: 68 (Half Time 33)

Tries: Bjorn Basson (3), Pierre Spies (2), Morne Steyn, Wynand Olivier (2), Deon Stegmann, Derick Kuun

Conversions: Morne Steyn (7), Francois Brummer (2)
