Canterbury scrum coach Jason Ryan has been appointed the new scrum coach and analyst for the Black Ferns heading into this year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup.

As well as being the scrum coach for the Canterbury ITM Cup team, Ryan has worked with the NZ Under 20s; Brazil Rugby; the Crusader Knights development team and set up ‘The Front Row Club’, a coaching programme focussed on safe development of props and hookers.

Canterbury Coach Scott Robertson said he has no doubt Ryan’s experience and specialist skills will be of great value to the Black Ferns.

“Jase is a fantastic scrum coach. The great work he did with the Canterbury ITM Cup team was plain to see, so I know that he has a lot to offer the Black Ferns.

“All of us here are Canterbury Rugby are very proud of him for this appointment, which we know he fully deserves,” Robertson said.

Ryan said he is excited about the new challenge and looking forward to working with the world champion Black Ferns team.

“The Black Ferns have such a proud history and it will be an honour to join their coaching team as they work towards defending their World Cup title. I’m just looking forward to getting involved and making a contribution,” Ryan said.

The Black Ferns will assemble this month to prepare for the International Women’s Rugby Series in June against Australia, Samoa and Canada. The Women’s Rugby World Cup will then be played in France this August. Ryan will return as the scrum coach for the Canterbury ITM Cup team at the conclusion of the World Cup.
