Clermont made a statement of intent after beating Montpellier 26-22 in their Top14 clash on Sunday.

It was a scrappy game throughout but Clermont used their chances better, pouncing on countless mistakes by Montpellier for an impressive away victory over Jake White’s men.

The visitors held the lead throughout the game thanks to a faultless kicking performance by Camille Lopez. His boot ensured the victory even though Clermont were outscored three tries to two.

All Montpellier’s tries were scored by South Africans as Paul Willemse, Pierre Spies and Bismarck du Plessis all crossed the whitewash. But they were guilty of too many errors with sloppy handling errors costing the home side dearly in crucial moments of the match.
