Board member Damien Frawley has been appointed Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) Chairman after Rod McCall stepped down from the role with immediate effect for personal reasons.

Mr Frawley is a former Queensland and Wallabies second row (who played the last of his ten Test matches for Australia in 1988) and is the current CEO of Queensland Investment Corporation. He has 26 years’ experience in major global companies and has served on the QRU Board since 2013.

Mr Frawley said: “I want to thank and congratulate Rod for his outstanding service to Rugby in Queensland during his six years as QRU Chairman. His leadership has ensured growth and sustainability for our sport in a very tough Queensland sporting market.

“We hope to build on these strong foundations and to ensure the work continues with all our participants, clubs, schools, partners, volunteers and fans, who have helped us achieve great gains in the last six years.”

Mr McCall said: “It has been a privilege to have played a part in helping Rugby in Queensland grow in all areas since late 2009, however I feel now is the right time to hand over to Damien, who will provide excellent leadership to the organisation, given his background in business and sport.”
