Former Wallabies captain Dean Mumm will retire from professional rugby at the end of the year to focus on philanthropic interests, as well as furthering his career away from the game.

A veteran of 57 Tests, the 33-year old will have the chance to add to that tally before calling it a day at the end of 2017.

Mumm will hike to the North Pole in 2018 in a quest to raise funds for Borne, a premature birth research charity, a cause close to the heart of Dean, his wife Sarah and their son Alfie.

“I’ve had a great career in rugby and it’s given me so much but now I see it as an opportunity to give back, as well as spend some quality time with my family,” Mumm said.

“Sarah and I are really passionate about the premature birth foundation, so I’m looking forward to contributing whatever I can to helping the cause.

“It’s always tough to know when to call it a day but I’ve been really lucky to play rugby around the world and I’ve enjoyed my time recently as RUPA President as well,” Mumm said.

Mumm became just the 84th player to Captain the Wallabies when he ran out as skipper against Uruguay at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

It capped a memorable week for the then 31-year old, who welcomed his first child Alfie into the world just days earlier.

The Auckland-born forward also captained Exeter Chiefs during his three years in the English Premiership, while Mumm has amassed 122 caps for the NSW Waratahs over two stints.

“Dean’s not only a great footballer but a great person and one that I have really enjoyed coaching,” Qantas Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said.

“He made a big decision to return to Australia in 2015 and stepped up his game to a new level, while also taking on more responsibility in developing others around him.

“Dean’s got a real plan for his life post rugby and we will support with that in any way we can, but he has still got plenty of opportunities to leave a legacy in the gold jersey and I expect he will do everything he can to do that before he hangs up the boots,” Cheika said.
