The DHL Stormers defeated the Sunwolves 52-15 in their Vodacom Super Rugby match in Cape Town on Saturday evening to consolidate their place in the playoffs. In the earlier match played in Pretoria, flyhalf Lionel Cronje kicked a last minute penalty to steer the Southern Kings to a historic 31-30 win over the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.

Robbie Fleck’s Cape side received the Africa Conference 1 trophy afterwards for finishing top of their group and thereby qualifying for the knockout phase of the competition. His team scored eight tries against their Japanese opponents, with diminutive attacker Cheslin Kolbe dotting down a second successive hat-trick.

The rest of the try scorers were EW Viljoen, Seabelo Senatla, Damian Willemse and Dillyn Leyds (2).

The Kings finished clinched their second successive triumph on the road in Pretoria thanks to the winning penalty by Cronje, who kicked 21 points in total. Last week the Eastern Cape team defeated the Jaguares in Buenos Aires.

Makazole Mapimpi, Cronje and Malcolm Jaer were the try scorers, while the Vodacom Bulls’ tries were scored through Jason Jenkins, Duncan Matthews and Jaco Visagie.

Visagie’s converted try put the Pretoria team in the lead towards the end, however, in the end it was the winning kick by Cronje clinched a remarkable comeback win for the Kings.

The New Zealand sides now return to action next week following their break for the British & Irish Lions Series, when the final round of regular fixtures will be decided.
