The newly promoted Eastern Province Under-21 side traveled to Bloemfontein to face Free State at Shimla Park in their ABSA Under-21 Group A opener on Saturday.

The home side scored three first half tries and a penalty to take a comfortable 20 – 0 lead at the break.
Free State pretty much continued where they left off at the first half, as they added a further five tries without any reply from the visitors.
The only ray of sunlight for Eastern Province came through eightman Wynand Grassmann, when he scored back-to-back tries as the game reached the final ten minutes. Malcolm Jaer converted the second try as EP trailed 12 – 51 in the seventy second minute.
Despite having scored eight tries, Free State still had enough energy to score their ninth try as the game ended 58 – 12.
Scorers:
Free State (20) 58 – Tries: Andre Swarts, Carel-Jan Coetzee, Jan-Albert Venter, Nicolaas Lee, Jasper Wiese, Gunther Janse van Vuuren, Henry Immelman, Steven Meiring (2). Conversions: Swarts (5). Penalty: Swarts.
EP Kings (0) 12 – Tries: Wynand Grassmann (2). Conversion: Malcolm Jaer.
