Phil Burgess will captain England this weekend

England Sevens Head Coach Simon Amor has named his 12-man squad ahead of the first leg of Rugby Europe’s 2015 Grand Prix Sevens series in Moscow.

Phil Burgess, who captained the team to third place on the HSBC Sevens World Series in the Gold Coast this season, will lead the side in Russia this weekend.

Six players new to the sevens programme will be given the opportunity to impress in an England Sevens shirt.

Alongside Burgess, Tom Bowen and Warwick Lahmert, who have been regulars in the England squad in the World Series, will provide plenty of international experience.

Simon Amor said: “We have picked a young development team with a few experienced heads in Phil, Tom, Warwick and Alex Davis.

“It gives the new guys a great opportunity to pull on the England Sevens shirt in a strong competition and it will be a massive challenge for them.

“It is all about them learning and developing as individuals and we are looking to see that growth as we go through the tournament.

“They will play against some very good teams pushing very hard for Olympic qualification through this series. It will be a very steep test and great opportunity for us.

“Having qualified for an Olympic spot on behalf of Great Britain in the World Series, this tournament can now be 100% about development for this squad.

“Hopefully, they can take their first steps towards playing in the World Sevens Series next season.”

England ended the World Series on a high at the Marriott London Sevens last month after finishing fourth in the season rankings and qualifying Great Britain for the Olympic Games in Rio next year.

The Rugby Europe Seven series includes three tournaments, beginning this weekend in Moscow followed by Lyon (June 13-14) and finishing in Exeter (July 11-12).

Tickets for the Exeter leg are priced at £15 for a day pass for Saturday or Sunday, or £25 for a weekend pass which includes entry to the Friday night event. Children’s tickets are also available £7.50 per day or £10 for a weekend pass.
