EIGHT of the best from England saw them brush aside Spain to march into the Cup quarter-finals at the Exeter leg of the Rugby Europe Grand Prix 7s Series and Dan Norton insists the strong finish is just the confidence boost the team needed.

England crossed the whitewash on eight occasions as they demolished the previously unbeaten Spanish 48-0 to finish top of Pool B and set up a last-eight clash with Lithuania.

Norton, Alex Gray and Alex Davis all grabbed try doubles at Sandy Park while Sam Egerton and Ruaridh McConnochie also got their names on the scoresheet in what was a complete performance.

The Red Rose played well to beat Italy and Lithuania in their first two Pool games but reached new heights against Spain, which Norton believes bodes well heading into Sunday.

“It was very good performance from us and we’ve progressed well throughout the tournament,” he explained.

“We stuck to our game plan which we didn’t do in our first two games and it showed how good we can be.

“It gives us a lot of confidence heading into the quarter-finals – we’ve had a bit of time off after London, so we were always going to start slowly but it’s nice to play well and win three games today.

“It gives us confidence going into tomorrow but we know that will be another hard day as well.”

Unlike their previous match against Lithuania, England made the perfect start as, just a minute in, Egerton blazed clear down the left for a try in the corner.

And 7-0 soon became 14-0 as patient build-up saw the ball worked wide to Gray who cut inside for the score.

The hosts were now rampant as captain James Rodwell won the restart and Charlie Hayter fed a long pass out to Gray who once again cantered over the whitewash.

Norton cut between two Spanish defenders to touch down try number four after the break before the speedster showed his enviable pace once more by blasting his way through the middle for another score.

Spain’s misery was then compounded straight from the restart as McConnochie cleanly caught the ball on the left touchline and cruised over the whitewash for a 38-0 lead.

And Alex Davis completed the scoring with a late try double of his own to the delight of a raucous home crowd that Norton insists have added to the experience.

“The crowd have been awesome – it’s been a great turnout and ever since 11.30 this morning they have been screaming and shouting,” added Norton.

“They are enjoying the beers, enjoying the pies and cheering us on which is great.

“It was always going to be a progression for us here because we’ve got a mixed team with some new guys and some older lads with a bit of experience.

“Our aim is to do as well as we can, win as many games as we can and put in a good performance for the crowd.”
