The Valke, meanwhile, registered the biggest win of the day as they out-scored the Golden Lions 10 tries to two for an emphatic 64-13 victory, while Free State and the Leopards also registered strong starts to the competition.

The Free State beat the Pumas 22-10, while the Leopards defeated the Griffons 32-17.

In the final match of the day, Boland, who took the honours as the top team last season, cruised to a 26-0 halftime lead against hosts, the Blue Bulls, and maintained this fine form in the second half to score seven tries to only one by the Bulls for their 43-8 victory.

The National Girls Under-16 Week, meanwhile, also featured a mixed bag of results with a handful of big wins, while other matches proved to be nail-biting.

Boland, the Griffons, Border, Western Province and the Limpopo Blue Bulls all registered convincing victories to begin their campaigns on an encouraging note.
