In 1823 a Gilbert Ball was used in the very first game of Rugby Football- 194 years later we’re still going from strength to strength. Throughout the centuries, we have been trusted by the rugby family worldwide to produce a quality product specifically designed to enhance the enjoyment of the game, for all that use them. Gilbert remains the rugby ball of choice in South Africa and for virtually every international team and tournament worldwide.

In January 2016, we extended our agreement with the South African Rugby Union; and now a year later we are honoured to announce that we have done the same with the  Golden Lions Rugby Union for a further 5 years. “Gilbert has been a world leader in ball technologies for the last 20 years and as such, it was a no-brainer for us to continue with our relationship with them, especially with Gilbert also being a partner of Vodacom Super Rugby as well,” said Straeuli.

The brand Gilbert is forged from tradition and a simple set of core values which contributed to delivering quality product beyond expectations. We see the same in the Lions (GLRU) brand, Players and Management Team. “We are very pleased to be a part of the Golden Lions Rugby Union sponsorship family. Lions Rugby Company management has guided the Union to the top by believing in a sustainable plan and a great brand of rugby. We see a lot of synergy in that, which made it a comfortable decision to extend our involvement another 5 years.” Said Brett  Burnill – Director Gilbert SA.

Our first priority is to deliver and support the Union and its Teams wherever we possibly can. We will then be looking at opportunities where to leverage and extend our reach in a sustainable fashion that contributes to the Lions development projects as well as all the Schools under the GLRU flagship. “The Lions represent possibilities which encourage belief. We believe in GLRU and look forward to the possibilities this extended relationship offers in the future. The sponsorship ties in very well with our goals and the similarities between us promotes sustainability. We are honoured to continue as a part of their Sponsorship Family.” – said Erwin Schmidt- Gilbert Brand Manager.
