July 18 – The Golden Lions Rugby Union invited children from the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home to join them on Mandela Day – Monday, 18 July 2011 – to watch a training and gym session, meet the players, have lunch with them, pose for photos, collect autographs and just get to spend time together.

The GLRU sent a bus out to collect the 44 children and they were brought to the GLRU’s offices on Monday morning. They went straight to the field to watch a training session where the GLRU staff handed out some Lions energy sweets. As soon as the field session was over, the MTN Golden Lions players collected the children and took them to the gym. Many of the children learnt some gym techniques and skills, while others preferred to play with the gym balls and stretch bands.

Lunch was served after training and each player was paired off with one of the children. The lunch hour was spent chatting, swoping stories and getting to know each other before it was time to climb back on the bus and head back to the Children’s Home.

As the children climbed on the bus, they were each given an MTN Lions Super Rugby jersey, a lucky packet and some sweets for the road.

A very big thank you to Gilbert for donating the 52 jerseys for the children and their caregivers and to Horn & Phillips for the sweet packs.
