The Xerox Golden Lions jumped to the top of the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championships table on Saturday in their 113-3 demolition of Border at Ellis Park, while the Vodacom Blue Bulls defeat against DHL Western Province in Cape Town dropped them to fourth on the log after six weeks of play.
The Toyota Free State moved into third by beating the Cell C Sharks in Durban. The Natalians are battling this season and is second last on the log.

A summary of the weekend’s actions are here:

Cell C Sharks 3 (3), Toyota Free State 30 (13)

The home side was completely outplayed by the team from Bloemfontein, who scored four tries to claim full points in Durban. The Sharks surprised by playing Junior Springboks centre Andre Esterhuizen at flank for this match, but the result was not a good one.

The first half was fairly tight with penalties traded and a late Free State try, but in the second half the white jerseys ran riot. It was there for no surprise when replacement centre Pieter Jordaan scored the bonus point try with ten minutes to play.

Scorers:

Sharks (Under-21) 3 (3). Penalty: Tim Swiel. Toyota Free State (Under-21) 30 (13). Tries: Carel-Jan Wynand Coetzee, Don Mlondobozi, Pieter Jordaan, Warren Potgieter. Conversions: Potgieter (2). Penalties: Potgieter (2).

DHL Western Province 28 (16), Vodacom Blue Bulls 21 (3)

It was the Robert du Preez show at DHL Newlands on Saturday as the WP flyhalf scored 18 points in his side’s well-earned win over the Blue Bulls. The home side lost their first place standing on the log due to the fact that they could only score three tries, but will still be pleased with the win over a highly rated opponent.

The Blue Bulls, who trailed 16-3 at the break, come back well in the second half of the match to earn a losing bonus point. They will have to improve their discipline as Du Preez kicked three penalties and they conceded two yellow cards in the match.

Scorers:

WP (Under-21) 28 (16). Tries: Eital Bredenkamp (2), Robert du Preez. Conversions: Du Preez (2). Penalties: Du Preez (3) Blue Bulls (Under-21)21 (3). Tries: Dan Kriel, Ruan Steenkamp. Conversion: Kobus Marais. Penalties: Joshua Stander (2), Marais.

Xerox Golden Lions 113 (42), Border 3 (3).

The Golden Lions scored 17 tries as they totally outplayed Border, who is clearly out of their depth in the A-Division. Flyhalf Brenden Hewitt, who converted 14 of the tries, scored two himself for a match total of 38 points, whilst Koch Marx notched up a hat-trick.

Border has now conceded 91 tries in six matches without scoring one themselves.

Scorers:

Golden Lions (Under-21) 113 (42). Tries: Ashlon Davids, Bobby De Wee (2), Brandan Hewitt (2), Chris Newman, Christiaan Meyer, Damien Engledoe (2), Dylan Smith, Koch Marx (3), Matthew Phillips, Ramone Samuels, Victor Sekekete (2). In the B-Division, the EP Kings continued their good form by beating Griffons 59-7 in Welkom to remain top of the log.

The Steval Pumas lost 18-10 to the visiting Valke, Limpopo Blue Bulls kicked off their campaign with a 17-20 loss to SWD Eagles and on Friday, Boland outclassed Griquas 48-17.
