So close, yet so far for the Emirates Lions, as they stumbled over the last hurdle suffering a 20-3 defeat to the Hurricanes in their Vodacom Super Rugby final in Wellington, New Zealand.

Playing in their maiden Vodacom Super Rugby final the Lions were outgunned and outsmarted by the home side.

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of the possession (56%) and the territory (59%) the Johannesburg side could not turn the pressure into points.

Instead it was the Hurricanes that made the best of their possession while putting in a gallant defensive effort to be crowned the 2016 Vodacom Super Rugby champions.

The Lions lost but it was not for lack of trying as they threw everything at the hosts but were met by some serious resistance which is reflected in the statistics taken from the All Out Rugby App, powered by Vodacom.

The visiting side made 17 more carries than the Hurricanes, took the ball up 120 times compared to 103, which translated into 350 metres run, 77 more than that of the Hurricanes.

While the Hurricanes defended like their lives depended on it, the Lions still managed to beat 20 defenders to seven.

The two sides were neck on neck in the Clean Breaks department with the Lions making four, and the Hurricanes one less.

It was even-stevens at the breakdowns where both teams managed to pinch seven of the opposition’s ball, while the Hurricanes collected only two loose balls more than the Lions.

The Hurricanes proved that defence wins championships as they tackled the Lions into submission. The home side made 122 tackles — 35 more than the Lions.

The Lions conceded two more penalties compared to the Hurricanes while they also made two handling errors more than the hosts.

The set pieces proved to be an even battle between the two sides with the Lions winning one scrum more on their own ball although they won six more lineouts on their own throw.

True to form, the two teams in this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby final finished top of the piles in most of the attacking categories on the All Out Rugby App and we look forward to seeing who tops the stats in the 2017 Vodacom Super Rugby.

The All Out Rugby App is available for free on the Google Play store, iOS App store, and the Vodacom App store.

The App will also be available during the 2016 Castle Lager Rugby Championships putting the power of knowledge in the hands of the fans.
