The Steval Pumas have several injuries to contend with after the side’s hard-fought Nashua Currie Cup match with the Cell C Sharks at Mbombela Stadium last Friday. Whilst most of the injuries appear superficial, flank Lambert Groenewald will be out for 2-3 weeks with a calf muscle tear.
“Most of the injuries don’t appear serious, but the scans will give us a better indication of whether there is anything else to take note of,” said Steval Pumas head coach MJ Mentz.
Short-term injuries:
• Francois Brummer will undergo x-rays for a lumbar facet joint impaction. Medical clearance should be given later this week.
• Marnus Schoeman is scheduled for an MRI scan for an elbow/tricep contusion. Medical clearance should be given later this week.
• Marlou van Niekerk and Stephan Greeff are both scheduled for MRI scans for shoulder contusions. Medical clearance should be given later this week.
• Justin van Staden has a back muscle spasm but should be fit for the weekend.
• Reynier van Rooyen has a quad contusion but should also be cleared to play.
Long-term injuries:
• Brian Shabangu is recovering from an intercostal muscle injury and will not be available for selection this weekend.
• Ruwellyn Isbel will still be in rehab for a minimum of two weeks due to a fractured thumb.
• Rassie van Vuuren is out of action with a lumbar disc injury and will see a specialist on Thursday.
• Simon Westraad is still undergoing rehab following surgery on a dislocated shoulder 12 weeks ago. Anticipated date of return is September.
• Johan Herbst is starting rehab for a ruptured bicep injury. Anticipated date of return is October.
• Giant Mtyanda is having his left ACL reconstructed in Durban. Anticipated date of return is March 2017.
Returning from injury:
• Hoffman Maritz will return to full training on Friday after recovering from surgery on a torn hamstring.
• Marne Coetzee could possibly be cleared this week as he recovers from an MCL tear.
• Reuben Johannes has a calf strain but has started running.
• Nardus van der Walt has a partial ACL tear but has been cleared to play until the ACL tears completely.
The Steval Pumas face the Xerox Golden Lions in the second round of the Nashua Currie Cup on Saturday at 15h00 in Johannesburg. The team for the match will be finalised on Thursday.
