SOUTHERN DISTRICTS V EASTWOOD
The rematch of a thrilling battle just weeks ago, when Eastwood stole the victory with just seconds left in the match, the return fixture at Forshaw Park was a similarly high scoring affair with a heartstopping finish. Southern Districts managed to square the ledger, scoring the winning try with just three minutes to play, and taking the victory 25-24.

THE MATCH
Eastwood were unable to take advantage of an early opportunity for a penalty goal in the second minute of the match, but Captain Hugh Perrett lead by example just minutes later – scoring a runaway try in the sixth minute to put the first points on the board. Ben Batger added the extras, but the accuracy of Volavola for the Rebels shortly after saw Eastwood’s gap narrowed to four points, 7-3.

Another penalty, this time to the visitors to take the score to 10-3 to Eastwood, Batger having recovered from his uncharacteristic miss on his first attempt. The second try of the match was scored as easily as the first, with centre Mike McDougall crossing for Eastwood in the corner.

The points continued to pile on, with the score reaching 17-6 with ten minutes to play in the first half, but it wasn’t until Apolosi Latunipulu crossed in the corner for Southern Districts in the 38th minute that their effort was rewarded. The extra points couldn’t be added, and the teams went to the break with the score 17-11.

Latunipulu was buoyed by his earlier efforts and wasted no time in crossing the line after the re-start; converted by Volavola the home side took a one point 18-17 lead in the 44th minute.

A try to Eastwood was deemed held up, but they were determined to wrest the momentum from the Rebels, and were able to take the score to 24-18 with a converted try. But as with their previous match-up this season, it looked to go down to the wire as the Rebels fought back strongly in the final ten minutes.

Ben Volavola continued his excellent form this season with a try in the 76th minute and regaining the lead for Souths as he added the extras. With just two minutes to play in the match, the home team was clinging to a one point point lead – but it proved too much for Eastwood to come back and they took the victory at home.
