Waratahs hooker Hugh Roach has helped Eastwood hand Manly their first loss of the 2015 season in a 43-16 blowout between the two top of the table teams.

This huge win gives Eastwood huge momentum heading into the final rounds of the Intrust Super Shute Shield competition and helps them recover from their previous 41-18 loss to Manly back in Round 9.

Eastwood started the game strong with flyhalf Jai Ayoub putting in a number of great kicks early, and was unlucky to not score a try in the fourth minute of the game.

The first points of the game were put on the board by reliable Eastwood fullback Ben Batger, who kicked an early penalty in the second minute.

Woods second rower James Neale scored the first five pointer of the game after a quick pick and drive from directly in front of the try line. Batger delivered the conversion and Eastwood had a quick 10-0 lead after eight minutes.

Manly completed several phases of play, and in the 16th minute were rewarded with a penalty goal from Reece Hodge, cutting the Eastwood lead to just seven points.

Eastwood had a number of chances inside Manly’s 22 in the first 25 minutes of the game but were unable to add to their lead until the 27th minute, when Ben Batger added another penalty goal to give Eastwood a 13-3 lead.

Manly hit straight back with Reece Hodge knocking over his own penalty goal and cutting the lead back to seven points again.

Eastwood earned a penalty try in the 34th minute after a terrific scrum five metres out pushed the Manly pack all the way in goal, with Batger adding the extras.

Woods winger Ben Shorter had to leave the field after receiving a knock to the head while contesting a high ball and was replaced for the duration of the game.

Although Eastwood dominated possession for the final 10 minutes of the half, Manly received a penalty on the buzzer and Hodge knocked over his third penalty of the game, and the players went into the sheds at halftime with Eastwood having a 20-9 lead.

The first 15 minutes of the second half did not bode well for Manly, as Eastwood kicked an early penalty and halfback Matt Lucas was shown a yellow card leaving the Marlins a man down.

Eastwood immediately capitalized and scored a five pointer through Pat Sio who was playing his final game for the Woods before leaving to join French rugby side Stade Francais.

Manly were given some life in the 55th minute when referee Andrew Lees showed Eastwood winger John Grant a yellow card while also handing Manly a penalty try, the second of the day.

Eastwood responded unflinchingly, with Batger kicking another penalty and halfback Matt Gonzales demonstrating his speed to score for the Woods. Minutes later Eastwood’s Jarrod Barry drilled Manly’s Shaun Treweek to give his teammate Michael Kovacic the ball to set up Hugh Roach over, giving Eastwood an insurmountable 43-16 lead.

Woods held on for the win, and the bonus point win leaves them just one point behind Manly who sit on 55 points after 13 rounds.
