Pink Day at Dale. It is a First in many ways!

We spoke about and discussed at Reunion the Dale Pink Day as part of the CANSA awareness week and the need to become part of an educational drive about cancer awareness. We will also and soon let you have the programme detailing the involvement of and CANSA education at Dale and the plans for the week.

Many of us at the Dale Schools and at the ODU and our friends and families have been touched and made aware of the effects of cancer that knows no bounds, colour, age, gender, wealth or timing in life. The Cancer Survivors walk earlier this year in East London again highlighted that no one is ever not susceptible to contracting the terrible disease. CANSA statistics show that one in four in South Africa is likely to contract cancer. Thoughts developed at this function and after Jack Rosenberg’s phone call after his visit to the Doctor who had diagnosed Prostate Cancer, plans of a Dale Pink day became more galvanised. An article in a local newspaper at the time tells that only 20% of children survive cancer in the Eastern Cape and only because the community do not know what to look for when illness presents itself. This is far below normal statistics.

We are teaching boys at the Dale Schools as Education Department dictates but we do fall short of influencing Social Norms and Awareness Programmes of showing solidarity with affected sufferers or any of their families or the general public. Dale has had a participating team at the Survivors Walk in years gone by but we need to take this association further.

The week of 30 July to 4 August 2012 is Cancer awareness week. The Dale First XV play Selborne College on the 4 August in King William’s Town on the Dale College, C B Jennings field and at this game will be wearing Pink Strip to show solidarity and empathy with all who know of cancer and to draw attention to cancer and hopefully educate in both the urban and rural areas. The Dale College SGB and the Headmaster have given full support and so has the Dale First XV coach – Grant “Griffy” Griffith – for Dale Pink day.
Yes you read correctly – PINK.

The Dale First XV will playing for everyone on the day and wearing Pink Jerseys and Shorts and wearing traditional Dale Red & Black socks against our old rivals, the great Selborne College .
The Gold Dale Heron will be in place on the jersey to celebrate both First XV status and to celebrate the survivors or those in remission from this terrible disease.
The Numbers on the back will be in Black as a player identity and to remind us of those who have not made it because of the cancer and associated complications.
On the sleeves will be Dale College / Old Dalian Union also in Black
Pink is the colour of Cancer awareness, support and solidarity. We can find no record of any other School that has done this and in effect it would be to give Dale exposure and an association with a social awareness programme and bring in spectator support for a worthy cause. This will become an annual programme at Dale and we hope that it will spread to eventually having a Pink Day in school sport in South Africa.

We are mindful of all who have contracted cancer where ever they might be. In addition to past Dale teachers and pupils we mention those that we know well from the Dale family and who have been touched by cancer and are:
Rev Tom Higgs – First XV (1946 & First XV coach 1954 – 1960) , Head of Dale Junior, Headmaster of Queen’s College
Basil Schwulst – First XV (1965, 66, 67 & 1968) He wears his Survivor’s Pink Golf Shirt with pride
Ray Ranger – First XV (1974 / 75) Captain and Captain of Cricket First XI (1973 to 1976)
Jack Rosenberg – First XV 1945 and Cricket First XI
Laurrie Beadon – First XV 1973 / 74
Kenny Watson – First XV 1973/74 and Cricket 1970 to 1975 and South Africa. Coaches cricket at Hudson Park
Gordon McCune – Old Dalian
Mr. T.V. Smit- Former Dale teacher 1972 to 1979 (Dr Paul Smit’s father)
Dr Brian Jennings – of Dale’s famed Jennings family.
Derrick Moodie – Former ODU President
Rodney Breetzke – Former ODU President
Trevor Balzar – Former ODU President
Michael Farrer – First XI cricket (1979 to 1982)
Wives of former ODU Presidents
Jean Petzer (at Dale Junior)
Glenda Turner
Irene Bennet

These are no doubt a sample few, Pink Day at Dale association would be in solidarity with everyone in South Africa and the World but particularly locally and with Dale family members.
CANSA are on board with us and are very excited about this “first” and the Dale association. There are plans to address the Dalians at assembly and to provide an education programme on the 4th August at the Dale fields for individual PRIVATE breast and concern examination and advice to those wishing to take up their offer.
Pink day at Dale will be an annual Dale Social Enterprise and Awareness Campaign through the powerful medium of sport and press cover.
Wearing Pink at Dale will play an important role and bring attention to all Dalians, their families, sufferers and those who have been touched and CANSA that they are supporting.
We as Old Dalians and friends of Dale have a very BIG role role to play here as well. A financial role.
Please “dig deep” and let us have a donation towards Dale Pink Day. To kick off an anonymous Old Dalian has donated R2,000.00 as his contribution. All contributions large and small will be gratefully accepted
We also need your help in persuading your employers and companies that you associate with and your friends to give a substantial donation to a cause that affects everyone in some small or big way. We are hoping that when all costs are accounted for that a donation will be made to CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) who continue to be involved with Research, Education and Support projects to raise awareness and the education of as many people as possible about cancer.
