Cardiff Blues have confirmed that Gethin Jenkins will continue as the region’s captain in the 2016/17 season.

The 131-times capped prop took up the honour last season and helped the region to a resurgence in the second half of the campaign.

Now head coach Danny Wilson has backed him to continue in the role as Wales’ capital region set their sights on the new season.

“Gethin’s an outstanding leader on and off the field,” said Wilson.

“He has a very good tactical feel for the game and demands high standards on and off the field.

“He has achieved a phenomenal amount in the game and proved during Wales’ summer tour of New Zealand that he still has plenty to offer on the international stage, not to mention for Cardiff Blues.

“We are fortunate to have a number of leaders within our squad and Gethin will be complimented by the likes of Matthew Rees, Sam Warburton, Ellis Jenkins and Lloyd Williams.”

Jenkins is embarking on his 11th season across two stints with Wales’ Capital Region. During that time he has made 169 appearances, scored eight tries and played his part in the Anglo-Welsh and European Amlin Cup success.

He is now entering a testimonial season which is being supported by both Cardiff Blues and the Welsh Rugby Union.

The Blues kick-off their new PRO12 season this Saturday, when they take on Edinburgh at Cardiff Arms Park.
