Wellington Under 19 have secured the Graham Mourie Cup in the premiership division of the inaugural Jock Hobbs Memorial National U19 Tournament after beating Canterbury 32-21 in Taupo this afternoon.

Meanwhile Southland Under 19 beat Manawatu  26-21 in the championship division to win the Michael Jones Trophy.

Openside flanker, Mitchell Karpik of Auckland Rugby A was named the player of the tournament, and took out the Sir DJ Graham Award for his outstanding performance across the tournament which commenced last Sunday.

New Zealand Rugby General Manager Community and Provincial Union Rugby Brent Anderson said the inaugural Jock Hobbs Memorial National U19 Tournament delivered on its commitment of quality rugby, meaningful competition, valuable education and a great showcase for the next generation of rugby players.

“Congratulations to Wellington and Southland for their victories today, and also Mitchell Kaprik for earning the player of the tournament award. Their performances mirrored the consistently high quality rugby we have seen from all teams this week.

“The tournament has been a fantastic success and further demonstrated rugby in New Zealand is in great heart.”

400 Under 19 rugby players represented their Provincial Unions or the NZ Heartland team across a week long tournament in Taupo.
