The MTN Golden Lions continued there impressive unbeaten run in the 2011 ABSA Currie Cup competition when they beat the Vodacom Blue Bulls 36-27 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

The Bulls had the upper-hand for most of the first half but a lapse in defense shortly before half-time meant they only had a three point lead at the break after Lions captain Joshua Strauss scored under the uprights. The Bulls went into the locker rooms leading 19-16

The Lions shifted into a higher gear after the break and capatilised on the Bulls’ lack of discipline. They set up maul after maul and after the umpteenth penalty it was Flip van der Merwe who got sin-binned. Van der Merwe was again on the wrong side of the law minutes after he returned from his 10minute break and this time referee Jaco Peyper showed him red. The Lions also finished the match with 14 men with Michael Rhodes getting yellow for a professional foul.

Michael Killian crossed over for two tries in the second half to help his side down the Bulls at fortress Loftus. With Elton Jantjies also on song with the boot. Francois Brummer could not convert any of his side’s three tries and could only manage four penalties.
