Marlow was crowned on Saturday as the champions of Die Burger Rugby Competition after beating Paarl Boys High 11-10 in a thrilling final.

The match was played at Cradock in front of Marlow’s huge number ofloyal supporters.

It is very, very difficult for a visiting team to win at Marlow, and this final proved it.

The Marlow players tackled like demons and kept up a very high tempo for the whole match.

The Marlow forwards impressed in the scrums and in a number of scrums Paarl Boys High got the ball on the back foot.

The way the Marlow players counter-attacked also impressed and a very prominent player in their attacks were no 8, Luigy (Anker) van Jaarsveld. He is a thorough “footballer” and showed a lot of pace when he scored his team’s only try.

Paarl Boys High played an attacking style and kept the ball in hand, but they should have made better use of the strong wind behind their backs in the 2nd half.

MAN OF THE MATCH – Van Jaarsveld (Marlow)

BACKLINE PLAYER OF THE MATCH:  Jordaan Schoeman (scrumhalf, Marlow)

FORWARD OF THE MATCH – Ruben de Villiers (lock, Paarl Boys).

POINTS:  Marlow – try by Van Jaarsveld and penalties by Gerhard Potgieter (flyhalf) and Andre Kritzinger (center)

Paarl Boys:  Tries:  Wian Gouws (wing) and Curtley Grain (center)

Referee:  Ruhan Meiring (SWD).

FINALS MEDIUM SCHOOLS

In a very entertaining match Brandwag (EP) gave an impressive display to beat Augsburg 49-33.

Brandwag are a very well-drilled team and their rolling mauls were pin-pointed executed.

After been out on their feet in the first halve, Augsburg (Clanwilliam, Boland) came storming back and at one stage there were only a few points separating the teams.

But the class and power of Brandwag were at the end too much for the Bolanders.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH:  Morney Moos (flank, Brandwag)

FORWARD OF THE MATCH:  Adriaan de Waal (hooker, Augsburg)

BACKLINE PLAYER OF THE MATCH:  Shevaan Hendricks (flyhalf, Brandwag)

Points: Brandwag:  Tries were scored by Moos (3), Michael Venter (wing), Frankie Fourie (lock) and Armand Ferreira (replacement),  Hendricks also kicked 5 conversions and 3 penalty goals.

Augsburg:  Tries: De Waal (2), Jaydrin Kotze (center), Ruben Brand  (center) and Tiaan Oertel  (wing).  Brand kicked 4 conversions.

FINAL SMALL SCHOOLS

Excelsior Secondary gave an excellent display to beat Bertram Secondary (EP) by 39-3.

Excelsior plays an attacking style of rugby and their playmaker was flyhalf Dennis Cox.  Cox (who played last year for the WP Cravenweek team) is definitely one of the best schoolboy flyhalfs in South Africa.  His vision, passing skills and attacking skills are top-class.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Cox (Excelsior)

FORWARD OF THE MATCH:  Denver Beukes (no 8) Excelsior.

BACKLINE PLAYER OF THE MATCH:  Clint Damon (center) Excelsior.

POINTS:  Excelsior:  Tries: Daniel Joubert , center, (2), Damon (2) en Noël Makiet (replacement). Cox kicked 3 conversions and 2 penalty goals.  Lyle Marcus (fullback) also converted one of the tries.

Betram:  Penalty by Caylem Goliath (centre).
