Monument keep upper hand over Glenwood since 2013

Loading...The “Wit Bulle” of Monument (Monnas) in Krugersdorp recorded a convincing victory of 30-19 in their annual Premier Interschools against Glenwood in Durban on Saturday.
Monnas boasts an excellent record against Glenwood with only defeat against the Durban-side since they’ve been meeting annually on the rugby field in 2010. That defeat of 18-25 was way back in 2012.
Monument played the first half into a breeze, but still managed to take the narrowest of leads with the scoreboard reading 6-5 in their favour.
Glenwood’s winger Janus Hendrikz scored the opening try of the match in the third minute to give his side a 5-0 lead. Hendrikz gave Monnas’ defence trouble each time he got his hands on the ball.
It was the trusty boot of Monument’s flyhalf, Jonathan Viljoen, who gave his side a 6-5 lead at the break with two well-struck penalty goals. Viljoen’s tactical kicking as well as decision making was spot on during the game.
With the wind at their backs it only took Monnas 31 seconds in the second half to score their first try when lock Cristen van Niekerk chrashed over. The try was converted by Viljoen to take their lead to 13-5. He also slotted his third penalty goal shortly afterwards to stretch the lead to 16-5.
The livewire hooker, Morné Brandon, scored his side’s second try with Viljoen adding the extras. The flyhalf then produced the magic with a well-placed kick which was plucked out of the air by winger Brendan Buitendag to score. Viljoen converting to give his side a comfortable lead of 30-5 after 50 minutes of play.
Glenwood gave their effort some substance during the last 12 minutes of the match. In the 58th minute the replacement lock of Monnas, Humphries du Randt, was sin-binned. Another replacement this time on Glenwood’s side Rory Atwill scored shortly afterwards with the replacement flyhalf, Connor Allan converting to shrink Monnas’ lead to 12-30.
Outside centre, Conan le Fleur, scored the final try of the match which was duly converted by Allan. Le Fleur and his midfield partner, Rynardt Jonker, performed well throughout the match. Jonker is the son of former provincial referee, Marius Jonker. The final score being 30-19 in the favour of the visitors from Krugersdorp.
The “Wit Bulle” flanker Franco Schutte was named man-of-the-match. He and PJ Jacobs led the physical onslaught with some bone-crunching tackles.
