Live Premier Interschools Derbies

Paul Roos vs Affies – 28/03/2015 @ 16h45: Markotter Field Paul Roos

A huge match kicks off the tournament for Paul Roos’ 150th celebrations. Affies have kept the nucleus of their young 2014 side and are keen to prove they are back on track among the top 5 in SA schools rugby. They take on a Paul Roos side brimming with talent and of whom great things are expected. Sure to be a great exhibition of running rugby to set the tone for the season.

Glenwood vs Maritzburg College – 18/04/2015 @ 14h00: Kings Park (TBC)

Our second game of the campaign features the derby between Maritzburg College from Pietermaritzburg and Durban side Glenwood. This match could be played at Kings Park as a curtain raiser for a Sharks vs Bulls Super 15 game (to be confirmed). Glenwood has had the better of the fixture in recent years, but College has a proud rugby tradition and should prove again that class is permanent. This game just might have the most entertaining rugby on offer at Kings Park on the day.

Grey College vs Paarl Boys High – 02/05/2015 @ 14h00: Grey College

Paarl Boys’ High take the long road to Bloemfontein for their annual derby against the might of SA rugby schools. One of the toughest encounters for Grey College, Paarl Boys High is a team that doesn’t know when it’s beaten. They have one of the best recent records against Grey College as they drew in 2011 in Bloemfontein, won a year later in Paarl and only lost narrowly in 2013 and 2014. The Paarl team have a strong set of forwards and rely on them heavily to dominate up front. Grey College will, as per usual, have a set of forwards to match, backed up by some sublime backliners.

Paul Roos vs Paarl Gim – 16/05/2015 @ 12h00: Markotter Field Paul Roos

In mid-May we move back to the Markotter field in Stellenbosch to showcase the derby between old enemies Paul Roos and Paarl Gim. This will be one of the few home games Paul Roos have in their 150th year. Paarl Gim are keen to put one over the Maroon Machine during the celebrations after Paul Roos beat them on their home turf in 2014. The Paarl team has yet to win against the Stellenbosch lads in this age group but Coach Christoff Lotter knows how to assemble a winning team.

Glenwood vs Monument – 06/06/2015 @ 12h00: Glenwood

The Krugersdorp Witbulle travel down to Durban to face rivals Glenwood. The Grasshoppers will hope to beat their guests from up north after losing the last two encounters. They will have their work cut out as the Monnas team boasts one of the biggest sets of forwards this season. It will be a battle between them and the agility of the Glenwood backs. No inch will be given in this clash of the titans.

Paarl Boys High vs Paul Roos – 20/06/2015 @ 14h00: Brug Street Paarl

The season reaches halfway with a cracker between great rivals from the Winelands. Paul Roos make their third appearance on Premier Interschools and by now their team will be household names. After three dry years, Paul Roos clinched victory over Paarl Boys’ High last year with a winning try in the final seconds. The Paarl boys would love to return the favour in the Maroon Machine’s celebratory year. This is a difficult game to call as matches between these two class acts are always close.

King Edward VII vs Jeppe – 25/07/2015 @ 14h00: KES

Schoolboy Rugby doesn’t get much bigger than KES vs Jeppe, as we go north after the holidays for this derby between Johannesburg’s oldest rivals. Last year Jeppe could not pull off a hat-trick of wins as the two teams played out a draw. KES will be hungry for a first success since 2011 when these matrics were in Gr 8. What a fitting way to end their high school rugby careers if they can get one over the old enemy.

Paarl Gimnasium vs Paarl Boys High – 01/08/2015 @ 15h30: Faure Stadium Paarl

August brings the “Interskole” games and Premier Interschools televises the biggest of them all to kick off this month of historic encounters. Paarl Gim vs Paarl Boys High sees Northern Paarl battle Southern Paarl. Twenty odd thousand old boys, old girls, moms, dads and fans will pack Faure Stadium to watch a famous derby between two great schools. There is no neutral ground on this day – you are either blue and white or green, gold and red. Tough, uncompromising rugby always wins at this showdown.

Maritzburg College vs Grey College – 08/08/2015 @ 14h00: Goldstones College

The next big Interschools sees the return of Grey College in their revived Interschools with Maritzburg College. Last year the boys from Maritzburg had a rude awakening on their return to Bloemfontein. They are, however, playing on their hallowed Goldstones and as many a Grey team can attest, it is always tough. College will recall the feats of Joel Stransky and Shaun Glover, who helped win a memorable tie in 1985. Grey will have to be at their best to maintain their record against College.

Grey PE vs Selborne College – 15/08/2015 @ 12h00: Grey PE

A derby between two of the Eastern Cape’s best and most traditional rugby schools is broadcast for the first time by Premier Interschools. The team from Port Elizabeth will have two of their SA Schools players back, while Selborne will field the bulk of their age group team that starred from u/14 to u/16 in the Eastern Cape and Border area. Selborne also retained many of their key players from 2014 and are a strong and settled unit.

Paul Roos vs Grey College – 22/08/2015 @ 14h00: Markotter Fields Paul Roos

Paul Roos will feature in the last game of their season against their ultimate rivals. The Maroon Machine will know by now if their 150th year has been a success on the field. They should expect no favours from Grey College as the Bloemfontein boys will also be keen to end their season on a high. This might just turn out to be the match of the season as pride and passion will be at a maximum on both sides.

Oakdale vs Boland Landbou – 29/08/2015 @ 14h00: Oakdale Riversdale

Our last match of the season features two agricultural rivals: Boland – Landbou and Oakdale. These two schools regularly produce teams of outstanding quality from a very small pool. Both are rarely out of the top 20 rankings and have produced numerous Craven Week players for their provinces. This Interschools tussle is often a tight affair with neither team traditionally having a clear upper hand. Last year Boland Landbou won at home, playing with shear guts and preying on every mistake. This year the Oakdale Bulls will again have a top team and at home they will be tricky to beat.
