The NSW Waratahs have added to their playing stocks for 2017 with the announcement of flyhalf, Bryce Hegarty re-signing for a further season.

Hegarty first signed to the main squad in January this year. He earned two caps for NSW in the first few matches of Super Rugby of 2016 before being struck by a season ending ACL injury in round two against the Brumbies.

The 24-year-old utility back has previous Super Rugby experience, having played 33 matches for the Melbourne Rebels, securing 49 points for the Club, including seven tries. He joined the Waratahs after a stint overseas in the Japanese Top League.

Recently back running, Hegarty will be ready in time for the 2017 pre-season. NSW Waratahs Head Coach Daryl Gibson said he was keen to see Bryce back on the park for NSW.

“Bryce has been working hard on his rehabilitation and returning as a better athlete,” Gibson said.

“His season was cruelly cut short this year, but he is on track for a return in pre-season and is keen to perform for the team in 2017.

“Bryce brings a lot of experience and guidance in a position where, nationally, depth is being tested. So I’m really looking forward to how he can add to the new energy of the team next season.”

During his time in Melbourne, Hegarty made a name for himself due to his pace and accurate kicking game. He made his debut for the Rebels in May 2013 against the Blues as the youngest member of the squad.

Just one week later, at 20 years-of-age, he was named to make his run-on debut against the Stormers in an opening season that saw him score two tries in a come-from-behind victory against the Highlanders.

In 2014, he missed just one match and continued to score tries before being named the Rebel Rising Player of the Year.

Hegarty is the son of former Manly rugby league representative, Steve Hegarty who played in the Brisbane Broncos Under 20s team for three years. He too started his professional sporting career with the Brisbane Broncos Under 20s in 2011 and 2012 before making the move to the 15-man game.

A standout in the Norths under-18 league team, Hegarty was a star union player in his school days at Marist College, Ashgrove in the north of Brisbane. Born and raised in Queensland, Hegarty also studied at the Queensland University of Technology.
