The Eastern Province Rugby Union would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Genève Scholtz, aged 23, who passed away following a game between Quaru and Middleburg Stormers on Saturday afternoon.

Scholtz, who has played for Eastern Province and who had been selected as part of the SA Women’s training squad in 2011, was playing flank for Stormers in the game to determine which club would play against the Border woman’s club as a curtain raiser ahead of the Super 12 finals on 23 March 2013.

Scholtz was part of a ruck towards the end of the game, and was on the field shortly afterwards when she sat down and then collapsed. Medics immediately attended to her, removed her from the field and stabilised her, before transporting her to the Humansdorp Hospital.

She was assessed at the hospital and it was decided to airlift her to Port Elizabeth for more acute care, but she unfortunately passed away before the helicopter arrived. The exact cause of death has not yet been determined.

We wish to state that all the relevant requirements in terms of safety and medical care were in place during the match, including the relevant qualified paramedics and ambulance being present, as per BokSmart standards and protocols.

A representative from Eastern Province Rugby’s Executive, Freddie Makoki, has met with the family in Middleburg over the weekend.

A funeral committee has been established and will be looking at where they can assist the family during this time of grief. Funeral arrangements will be communicated as soon as they are available.
