Homeboyz duo Leonard Mugaisi and Humphrey Mulama have been handed HSBC Sevens World Series debuts by new head coach Paul Treu as the former Springbok Sevens coach named his Kenya squad to compete at the Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens on 29-30 November.

Speedster Mugaisi was named ‘Most Valuable Player’ at Kenya’s 2013 Safaricom Sevens Series, while 19-year-old Mulama has broken through the ranks from Kakamega High School, having featured for the Kenya Under 19 side that lost to Namibia in the final of the Africa Under 19 Championships last August.

“This was our first opportunity to select the team and I think we’ve seen a blend of youth and experience,” said Treu.

“Its an incredible experience for the two youngsters Humphrey and Leonard to have made the team. Hopefully they will grab the opportunity with both hands.”

Andrew Amonde captains the side, which features experienced players in Collins Injera, Patrice Agunda, Horace Otieno and Biko Adema, but Oscar Ouma, Billy Odhiambo and Sidney Ashioya all sit out the tournament due to other commitments.

“It was a bit challenging in terms of squad selection, some of the key players not available either because of work or studies. We will definitely see one or two players come in for the third leg in Port Elizabeth,” added Treu.

“For now, we’ve managed to select a very good squad, and with the captain, Andrew Amonde taking the lead we hopefully will do well in Dubai.”
