ABSA Currie Cup LogoPlatinum Leopards hooker Gavin Williamson has been suspended from all forms of rugby for one week after he was found guilty of foul play during Saturday’s Absa Currie Cup game against Vodacom Western Province at Newlands.

Williamson received a red card and was sent off the field by referee Sandile Mayende for breaching Law 10.4 (a) after he punched the Vodacom WP’s Deon Fourie.

A telephonic SARU judicial hearing was held which was chaired by Advocate Jannie Lubbe. The Platinum Leopards hooker admitted a breach of Law 10.4 (a).

His defence testified that the action was not premeditated and that the Vodacom Western Province player was not seriously injured following his actions. They also argued that the red card had a serious effect on the Platinum Leopard’s team as Williamson was sent off early in the second half.
Lubbe, after considering all relevant facts and available video evidence, recommended a suspension of two weeks. He however reduced the recommended sanction by one week after taking into account that this was the first time that Williamson had appeared before a disciplinary committee in a career in which he has played for the Lions, Platinum Leopards and SWD Eagles in more than 115 first class matches.

The player has the right to appeal.
