This Saturday sees the Premier Interschool’s showcase the second of its 12 derby matches for the season.
Paul Roos make the short trip to neighbours Paarl for one of their biggest and toughest clashes of their local season.

Both teams are coming of victories in their previous games. The home team got a good win against highly rated Boland Landbou and will take confidence into Saturday’s clash. Paul Roos in turn also had a very good win against Grey High of Port Elizabeth and will look to maintain their good form.

Both teams suffered one loss during the season so far. Paarl Gim lost to Garsfontein in their North vs South derby and Paul Roos lost to Affies at St Johns festival over the Easter weekend. Paul Roos looks extremely dangerous in the backs while their forwards are solid. Paarl Gim as always have a big pack of forwards that likes to dominate their opponents and silky backs who can run a team ragged. With this said this weekend’s game wil again be a cracker affair between two very proud rugby schools.

These two schools share a long and rich history in rugby. The first record of old boys of the two schools played together for SA was way back on 24th November 1906. That day Steve Joubert was the first of many Gimmies to represent his country and his Bok captain was Paul Roos himself when the Springboks played Ireland in Belfast.

The game will be broadcast live Saturday 16 April on SuperSport Select (channel 210) at 14:00. Watch the build-up show this Wednesday on SS1 at 17:15. See full schedule at the bottom of article.

Their biggest rivals is Paarl Boys High situated in the Southern Paarl. Their annual Interschools have the unofficial title of “Biggest Interschools” in South Africa.

In 2012, while still at school, their captain and pivot Handre Pollard represented South Africa at the u/20 World Cup tournament with aplomb. Called up for the injured Johan Goosen, Pollard played a vital role in SA winning the final against New Zealand. He again respresented SA u/20 in 2013 and captained the side in 2014. The young man is currently plying his trade with the Blue Bulls Super15 team and in 2014 he became Paarl Gym’s 20th Springbok.
