Ticket sales for the World Rugby U20 Championship on Saturday at the Academy Stadium have surpassed 5,000 as the tournament prepares for a home nations takeover.

All four of the home nations, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, will take to the field at the Academy Stadium on June 11, in what is being billed as ‘Super Saturday’. Title holders New Zealand will open proceedings at 1.30pm as they take on Ireland, who won their opening pool game against Wales on Tuesday, while the New Zealanders kicked-off their campaign with a convincing 55-0 win over Georgia at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Wales will then face Georgia in the second match of the afternoon, before home team England conclude the day’s fixtures against Scotland, who picked up an historic victory over Australia in the opening round.

Commenting on the ticket sales, which mark a new record for the Academy Stadium, RFU Chief Executive Officer Ian Ritchie said:

World Rugby U20 Championship, June 7 – 25
‘We’re delighted to see so much appetite for the World Rugby U20 Championship in Manchester, particularly on ‘Super Saturday’. We expect the crowds to grow as we move further into the competition so to have such a strong attendance on match day two is a real testament to the quality of rugby on offer, and the appetite for sport in the North West.

“We have also seen very strong sales for match day three at AJ Bell Stadium, when New Zealand take on Wales and England face Australia. Tickets remain available for all games so we would encourage supporters in the North West and further afield to come along and support the future stars of the game.”

Saturday’s attendance will be a record for the Academy Stadium, with pre-sale tickets now sold out. A small number of tickets will be available on match day from the ticket office. Supporters wishing to purchase tickets should arrive early to avoid disappointment.
