The world of the oval ball may be traditionally dominated by men, but SA Rugby will celebrate Women’s Month this year by partnering with Caring4Girls to donate sanitary products to disadvantaged women, while females will be allowed free entry at selected Currie Cup matches.

Women in rugby will also be celebrated at the forthcoming Youth Training Centre tournament in Pacaltsdorp near George where the U18 and U16 SA Rugby Youth Training Centre (YTC) teams will face one another in what has become an annual SA Rugby Women’s Month celebratory match.

In conjunction with the Currie Cup unions and sponsors Nashua and DirectAxis, would like to encourage rugby fans to support the Caring4Girls initiative by donating sanitary products at the six Premier Division matches on Women’s Day, Wednesday 9 August, and on Saturday, 12 August, in the collection boxes at the host stadium entrances.

DirectAxis and Nashua have each volunteered to donate R5000 worth of sanitary products to the cause, while they will also have sanitary product collection points at their offices.

Furthermore, a video featuring actor, comedian, and activist Siv Ngesi, who is also the ambassador for the Sanitary Product drive, has been published on SA Rugby’s social media channels documenting the struggle women who lack adequate sanitary products face, while also providing more information on the Currie Cup Women’s Month activations. As a special treat for the fairer sex, all women will be granted free access to Tafel Lager Park in Kimberley and Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Women’s Day (Wednesday, 9 August) for the matches between Tafel Lager Griquas and DHL Western Province, and Steval Pumas and Toyota Free State Cheetahs respectively. Children will also be able to enter for free at the Mbombela Stadium.

The Toyota Free State Cheetahs will afford female fans the same luxury on Saturday, 12 August, for their clash against Tafel Lager Griquas in Bloemfontein. These tickets, however, have to be collected in advance.

“I would like to thank our provincial unions and Currie Cup sponsors for their support in assisting us to mark Women’s Month on a very special note this year,” said SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux.

“Women form the cornerstone of society and it is fantastic that we are able to celebrate their contribution through this joint-initiative with our partners.

“We live in a society in which some girls miss up to 50 days of school every year due to a lack of access to adequate sanitary products, and I would like to appeal to our rugby faithful to assist us in making a difference by donating sanitary products at the Currie Cup matches on 9 and 12 August.

“Society is very similar to rugby in the sense that the best results are earned through a collective effort. We would like to wish all female rugby fans an enjoyable Women’s Month and we hope that you enjoy the jam-packed rugby treat next week.”
