The South African Rugby Union (SARU) has confirmed the election of Mputumi Damane and Monde Tabata as the two independent members of the Executive Council (Exco) of the Union.

The pair were elected at the Exco meeting of April 18 from a number of nominations and have confirmed their acceptance. Mr Damane and Mr Tabata fill the two positions on the 13-man Exco reserved for two independent members “on the strength of their exceptional business, rugby and professional acumen.” The position is for one year after which they may be eligible for re-election. Mr Tabata has been appointed for a second term.

Mr Damane is a graduate of the Michigan State University and completed his Masters in Business Administration in 1981. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Central Energy Fund (CEF). Mr Damane also acted as a consultant and advisor to the Minister of Minerals and Energy during 2000 – 2003.

Mr Tabata is a graduate from the Rhodes University, completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in African Political Studies and Industrial Sociology in 1985. He also was awarded an honorary doctorate in laws by an Australian University.

He has established a granite quarrying businesses in the Eastern Cape; and was previously the Managing Director of Megapro Marketing – a subsidiary of the Primedia Group – and the commercial agents of the South African Rugby Union. He is a director of Peermont Global Resorts (a casino company) and chairperson of the East Rand Youth and Children’s Trust.
