The SARU Girls Under-18 Week got off to a thrilling start at Glenwood High School in Durban on Monday with big scores dominating the opening day of the inaugural competition.

Western Province cruised to the highest score of the day as they thumped the Golden Lions 74-0 thanks to an impressive 12 tries. Such was the high quality of their attack, they built up an emphatic 38-0 lead at the break.

The Leopards and Border also started off the tournament on a memorable note, with the Leopards defeating the Valke 63-0 after racing to a 29-0 halftime lead, while Border scored a remarkable 13 tries for their 61-0 victory against the Free State.

African neighbours, Zimbabwe, whose performance marks their women’s debut in a South African provincial competition, meanwhile, also showed that they could be a tough force as they defeated Eastern Province 12-7. Zimbabwe trailed 7-0 at the break, but two second-half tries allowed them to register a morale-boosting victory.

In the other games Boland secured a 5-0 victory in a hard-fought battle with the Limpopo Blue Bulls, while SWD registered a 17-5 win against the Blue Bulls.

The clash between Boland and the Limpopo Blue Bulls was epic, with an unconverted try by Boland in the first half handing them a 5-0 lead. But with both teams giving everything on attack and defence, this proved to be the final score.

SWD, meanwhile, outscored the Blue Bulls three tries to one to begin their campaign on a solid note.

The players will have Tuesday off, and will return to the field on Wednesday, with the tournament concluding on Friday.
