The Leopards will face the Golden Lions in the final of the SARU EBJ Mining Construction Northern Sub-Union week being held in Potchefstroom, after both sides recorded hard-fought semi-final victories on Wednesday.
The final will be played on Friday at Profert Olën Park, with kick-off at 13h00. It will be the first of three curtain-raisers to the Platinum Leopards’ first Absa Currie Cup home match of the season, against DHL Western Province (kickoff 19h10).
The Leopards, featuring 13 players from the Klerksdorp club in their squad, beat Mpumalanga Platteland 42-23 in Wednesday’s first Premier semi-final. In the main match of the day, the Lions needed a last-gasp penalty to give them a 38-35 win over Griffons Platteland.
Had the match been drawn, the Griffons, whose players hail from the likes of Harrismith, Wesselsbron, Henneman, Frankfort, Parys, Odendaalsrus and Ficksburg, would have advanced to the final due to them having scored more points in the second half.
In the plate event, Blue Bulls Limpopo condemned big brothers the Assupol Blue Bulls to their second defeat with a 27-25 victory in the day’s first match. Limpopo will play the Valke in Friday’s plate final, after the East Rand side outclassed Mpumalanga Lowveld 40-0.
The tournament, which is open to all uncontracted players registered to non-premier league clubs, finishes on Friday, with all eight teams being involved in a final round of matches.
Eight teams will also contest SARU’s Southern Sub-Union tournament, due to be hosted by Boland in September.
