The Sharks Club XV and Griffons will meet in an exciting Central Amateur Provincial Championship final in Margate on Friday after establishing themselves as the top teams in the opening two rounds.

The Sharks Club XV built on their emphatic 82-12 victory in the opening round by defeating Free State 30-13 in their second match on Wednesday to claim their place in the final.

The Griffons, meanwhile, registered a 35-17 victory against Griquas Central to advance to the final.

In the other matches on Wednesday the KZN Wildebeest edged Free State Rural 30-26 and Griquas Rural pipped the Griffons NWK Rural 18-17.

The Sharks Club XV overcame a hard-fought first-half against the Free State in which they led 13-10 at half time to kick on for their 30-13 victory. In total the KwaZulu-Natal side ran in four tries to only one by the Free State, which allowed them to build up a convincing lead by the end of the match.

The Griffons also delivered a solid performance in their clash against Griquas Central, with an impressive five tries guiding them to a morale-boosting 35-17 victory. Griquas Central tried hard to make their presence felt, but the Griffons’ defence proved too good and resulted in the team earning only tries for their efforts.

The KZN Wildebeest and Free State Rural, meanwhile, were involved in a tight tussle from the outset as neither team gave an inch. So close was the match the teams both scored four tries and they were level on 14-14 at the break. But superior goal kicking allowed the KwaZulu-Natal team to force their way into the lead.

In the opening match of the day Griquas Rural staged a dramatic comeback from 17-0 down at the break to win their clash 18-17 against the Griffons NWK Rural.

In Friday’s matches Griquas Rural will meet the KZN Wildebeest in the Plate Final, Free State will go up against Griquas Central in the third and fourth-place playoff and Griffons Rural will take on Free State Rural in the seventh and eighth place playoff.
