Replacement Shimlas scrumhalf - Marlin Ruiters

An injury-time penalty by Doug Mallett, son of former Springbok coach Nick Mallett, earned FNB UCT a 30-all draw against FNB Shimlas in the opening match of the 2010 Varsity Cup in Port Elizabeth on Monday.

Both teams might well reflect on a game they could have and should have won! A draw is however perhaps a fair reflection of the contest between two spirited teams.

The strong wind might have made slick running rugby nearly impossible, but there were enough glimpses to interest every rugby fan for the rest of the 2010 Varsity Cup.

Shimlas, with the strong wind at their backs, had the better of the first half territorially whilst the Ikeys tried to run the Shimlas ragged. Neither team would have been satisfied at half time. Ikeys made too many handling errors and Shimlas should have used the wind at their backs better to build a lead of more than 8 points at half time.

Summary of Positives and Negatives:

–          Ikeys conceded many penalties at breakdown and did not have enough numbers at the breakdowns.

–          Shimlas dominated the breakdowns but failed to use this possession effectively.

–          Ikeys struggled in the lineouts and conceded a few tightheads at scrum time.

–          Shimlas were often guilty of not swiftly organizing of the 2nd and 3rd lines of defense.

–          Both teams were guilty of some aimless kicking.

–          The younger Shimlas showed some inexperience in not closing the game in the final few minutes.

The scorers:

Shimlas 30-30 Ikeys
