Springbok Sevens eyes second spot on Series log

London Sevens winners South Africa arrived in Scotland today with their eyes firmly set on capturing second spot in the HSBC Sevens World Series, which comes to and end this weekend at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.
The Springbok Sevens produced a stirring come-from-behind performance on Sunday evening to beat a rampant Fiji 24-14 at Twickenham. The 12-man squad will have only have two field sessions this week as the key focus will be to recover sufficiently for the Series finale in Edinburgh.
According to Paul Treu, the SA Sevens coach, the team still has plenty to play for in Scotland.
“We have good momentum at the moment and our focus now is to finish second on the Series table. We have everything to play for and will definitely give it our best shot,” explained Treu.
New Zealand claimed the overall Series title on Saturday when England failed to qualify for the Cup quarter-finals, while South Africa climbed to third spot on the log to reduce the gap on second-placed England to just five points.
Luckily for South Africa, they suffered no injuries of note, except for a few sore bodies and some niggles.
“The two matches against Fiji were really tough and we will use Tuesday as a recovery day. The conditioning staff worked extremely hard on our fitness levels in Stellenbosch and they deserve a huge amount credit,” added Treu.
South Africa’s pool opponents in Edinburgh are Kenya, Canada and Australia. Cecil Afrika stretched his points tally to 337 for the season so far, which include 36 tries.
