Springbok Sevens team to help Rugby Museum celebrate 1st birthday

Loading...The Springbok Sevens team will help the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum celebrate its first birthday on Wednesday – Heritage Day – by making a special donation to the collection at a public ceremony.
Springbok Sevens coach Neil Powell and his team will present one of their Team SA Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning jerseys to Jurie Roux, CEO of the South African Rugby Union, to go on display at the museum at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
Following the ceremony the team will be on hand to meet visitors, act as unofficial tour guides and challenge fans in the museum’s Springbok Trials game-playing zone. The ceremony will take place at 12 noon and is open to the public.
And, to mark ‘national Braai Day’, the first 200 visitors to purchase a ticket will also receive a special gift of a free burger at the Santa Ana Spur at the V&A Waterfront.
“We have had a terrific first year of operation at the Springbok Experience,” said Roux. “We opened it with the current Springbok squad and former national captains and we have had visits from the Junior Boks and Springbok Women. It seemed only natural that we should invite the Springbok Sevens squad to mark our first birthday, particularly as they have added to our rugby heritage this year.”
The Springbok Sevens team – performing as part of Team SA – produced a masterful series of performances to claim the Commonwealth Games title for the first time in Glasgow in July.
They beat four-time Commonwealth Games champions, New Zealand, in a pulsating final to end the All Blacks’ 100 percent record at the Games.
“The Springbok Experience is a living museum and we add important objects to the collection as times go by,” said Roux. “The Springbok Sevens team delivered a fantastic performance in Scotland this year and a piece of that event will live in on our collection to allow future generations to get close to the history.”
Roux said that the Springbok Experience had received more than 41 000 visitors in its first year of operation and had received overwhelmingly positive feedback from visitors. It was also nominated in the international category of the UK-based Museum + Heritage Awards.
The Springbok Experience opens at 10am on Wednesday. The Blitzboks will be in attendance from 12 noon to 13h30.
