14 MARCH 2016 – Supporters will be swapping rugby balls for books as the Vodacom Bulls will kick-start the Tries for Books campaign when they take on the Cell C Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Friday.

Vodacom launched the initiative with the aim of feeding the hunger for knowledge at underprivileged schools around the country.

Supporters are encouraged to bring a book to the match which they can drop off at the donation “pods” at the entrances of Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

By donating a book fans will not only give power for knowledge but will stand a chance to win a Vodacom Bulls hamper which includes a smartphone and a team jersey, as well as an on-field experience and photo opportunity at half-time .

Vodacom will donate R7000 for every try scored by a South African team during this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby competition which will go towards setting up e-libraries and donating books to schools in communities that need it most.

The Vodacom Bulls and the Cell C Sharks will have an extra reason to cross the whitewash as their efforts will empower young minds.

While the two teams slug it out between the four lines fans can get their side over the advantage line during the book donation drive.

Eighty-five percent of South Africans do not have access to a nearby library and the project’s aim is to drive education through literacy.

Basic Education MinisterAngie Motshekga, will also attend the match to see how the players and fans contribute to this initiative.

In her budget speech Minister Motshekga made a call to both government and corporates to support the department in their campaign to establish 1000 libraries per year.

These libraries form part of the Department’s Read to Lead Campaign which Vodacom is supporting.

Supporters are requested to bring along age-appropriate books that would advance the knowledge of scholars.

Vodacom has encouraged local schools to participate in a book drive of their own.

The school that donates the most books will receive a coaching clinic from the Vodacom Bulls players, thanks to Vodacom.
