Vodacom Cup Preview – Round Four

The traditional north-south derby featuring the Vodacom Blue Bulls and the DHL Western Province at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday (16h30) spices up the action in the 2011 Vodacom Cup as the competition enters round four.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls, current defending champions, started the season on a few low notes and are still winless after three matches. They lost to the Pampas XV (27-22), Boland Cavaliers (20-17) and the Sharks XV (30-19).

However, when it comes to playing against DHL WP at home, the Pretoria team have easily seen off previous challenges from the Cape side. The Bulls won in 2002 (60-33), 2005 (35-11), 2006 (45-35) and in 2009 (36-16).

Of their last six matches at Loftus Versfeld, DHL WP have won only one. That was in 2008, when the Cape side snatched a 37-35 win over their northern rivals.

In one of the other big games of the weekend, two of the five undefeated teams in this year’s Vodacom Cup – GWK Griquas and the Pampas XV – will go head-to-head as they continue to build momentum in this season’s competition when they meet up in Kimberley at the Diamantveld Hoërskool on Friday at 15h30.

The Pampas XV defeated the defending champions (27-22) in Potchefstroom last Saturday, and previously claimed the scalps of the Lions (15-9) and the Griffons (52-29). The hosts have been in rampant mood and have comprehensively defeated the Boland Cavaliers (42-25), Border Bulldogs (84-9) and the SWD Eagles (33-0) in their matches played this season.

The Sharks XV are currently leading the South Section log with 15 points and will be aiming to retain their status as one of the undefeated teams in this year’s competition when they travel to Johannesburg for their clash against the Golden Lions at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday at 14h40.

In the other Vodacom Cup games for the weekend, the Toyota Free State Cheetahs are in Windhoek on for their match against Namibia’s Welwitschias at the Hage Geingob Stadium (16h00), while the Valke host the EP Kings in Vanderbijlpark at 15h00.
