September is the gold ribbon month – marked as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; this is a time where globally, countries honour and remember children and families affected by this rare disease, and help rally awareness on the early warning signs of childhood cancer.  CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA is the only organisation in South Africa that provides nationwide physical and psychosocial support to children with cancer and other life-threatening blood disorders – and their families! The organisation, which has a head office, six regional offices and twelve accommodation facilities, also supports the specialist treatment facilities in academic hospitals. CHOC is encouraging all South Africans to “Go for Gold” by purchasing the gold ribbon from their regional CHOC offices.. The ribbon is to be worn throughout the month of September. It represents the courage of all our little heroes battling cancer, acknowledges every survivor and honours the memory of every precious life lost to childhood cancer.

In developed countries, childhood cancer has become largely curable with the overall survival rate between 70% and 80% whilst in South Africa the  rate is closer to 50%.  CHOC aims to ensure that more children in South Africa are cured and that the survival rate goes up. Your support of the GO FOR GOLD childhood cancer awareness campaign will go a long way in highlighting childhood cancer and showing support to those battling cancer around the world.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls will be utilising the game against the Griquas this weekend to assist in driving awareness around the work that CHOC does and childhood cancers.

Hanro Liebenberg, Captain of the Vodacom Blue Bulls for the clash, expressed his sentiments: “We made the call earlier this year to use most home games to drive charitable and good causes in our community, as we speak to masses of fans and rugby lovers. The team is really looking forward to getting behind CHOC, as this is a cause that is very dear to our hearts. The thought of beautiful little kids taking on the fight against cancer does scare most of us, but it’s also inspiring knowing just how tough and positive these little heroes are.”

CHOC together with the Vodacom Blue Bulls will be handing out FREE Golden Ribbons at the stadium on Friday evening, and are encouraging fans to wear them with pride, while making a bold statement.
